It isn't an actor's job to check props, they have others whose job it is to do so. He as told it was a cold gun by those who have that authority to say so.
You can bet that there will be a hefty civil suit that will probably nix the movie altogether, with Baldwin, producers, armorer, etc all listed. It won't bring back the departed, but at least the family of the victim can live comfortably and their descendants.

There is no such thing as a accidental discharge like there is no such thing as an accidental hammering. There is however a negligent discharge and that still falls on the person holding the weapon.
