There are alternatives to straws other than just paper or plastic. We could have reusable bamboo or steel straws. Plastic is the worst thing invented by man. We were perfectly fine using glass. But, some Corporate *sshole decided that plastic everything was cheaper and a more profitable business plan, than actually making something that would last. And your right, why bother with getting rid of plastic straws if they're still using plastic cups? The insanity is thick with ignorance and contradiction, I get it. But we have to start somewhere. What needs to be done, is investigate which California officials have investments in these companies that produce the straws. Because that’s the only reason they mandated them is because they found a way to line their pockets.
There are alternatives. Plexiglass would be able to be sanitized and reusable. We use metal and glass straws here at home. If I remember I usually ask for no straws, cutlery, etc for takeout.

There were paper straws before there were plastic straws, the old paper straws were rolled the thinly coated with beeswax, they did soften but you could finish a drink, and they neither smelled or tasted funny….i guess they lost that technology…..or did they just have chemicals they needed to use….
The very liberal minded gym I was a member of replaced the paper towels in the bathroom with air hand dryers to save the planet.(That's what the sign said.) At the same time they have 15 paper towel dispensers in place on the gym floor for the patrons to use to wipe down the machines post COVID.

Firstly, why don’t you describe the “smell” you speak of?
Secondly, as similarly easy: why don’t you advocate toxin- free, biodegradable paper straws, as opposed to plastic straws that create long lasting litter and bio hazards for some wildlife?
You don’t need to be an eco-zealot to like biodegradable products.
And lastly, the chatter and bad behaviour of some patrons that inhabit certain fast food places smells in a disturbing (though describable) way.
