This is completely fake news. That's not what's happening on the ground and Putin's plan was never to take Ukraine. They were trying to draw NATO in and begin the process of spreading us to thin.
Early in the war, infomation came out that the Russians had ininerator vehicles so that very few bodies would return to Russia. Also, they have been recruiting from rural areas and minority regions in the east. They offer over a year's income to them and so they go. Also, also, they press Ukrainians in the occupied areas to fight against Ukraine. Many hid or try to get out. Some may have willfully volunteered at first, but once they saw the Russians looting and shooting even them, they changed their tune.
