We get media ads in California, “If you have one of these on your house.” Points to electric meter. “You are eligible for free solar installation paid for by the government.” What they offer is long term power purchase agreements. 20-25 year iron clad leases that give them legal easements to your property and your roof. It’s tied to the structure. If you sell your home the buyer has to qualify for and sign a new 20-25 year lease regardless of how long you have paid. The company gets any tax credits, carbon offsets, and any excess power generated. You still pay a monthly “connection fee” to your utility company and a system that would cost $15k to buy outright costs the consumers $80-85k over the life of the contract and you still own none of the system.
A neighbor got roped into this. They installed 30 panels on his roof to generate his average needs when 10 panels would have done that except his home is surrounded by tall trees and the 30 panels get full sun only at mid day. When they asked why it wasn’t producing what they estimated they were told to cut down the trees. 🤷🏼♂️
