Top U.S. colleges facing questions over prioritizing legacy candidates

Many of the top colleges and universities in the U.S. give preference to applicants whose family members are alumni in a process known as legacy admissions. NBC News’ Stephanie Gosk takes a closer look at the lack of transparency from the schools and growing questions about the system.

  1. Go back to your own country? How many European Americans are packing up and moving back to the Caucasus mountains on Russia's border?

I am 24th generation Aotearoa New Zealand Māori living in my own country. Kia kaha tangata whenua! Power to indigenous people!

  2. I hate the idea of someone thinking I or anyone else only got into a college or university because the parents did. In fact, legacy is a thing because they are familiar with the school and their parents had a great time there and their kids want to go there. It’s like following in the steps of their parents. It is an honor, and you have to still work hard for it. Just because the parents went there shouldn’t equate to it have been easier for them.

  3. No one deserves priority for a college seat. Let them compete like everyone else. Chose those who have the best skills.

  4. People getting to inherit money and prestige from their parents but not their criminal accountability is one of the most illogical, unjustly thing that I find about western civilization or in english common law.
If people can inherit money then they should also be held accountable for their parents or grandparents crimes. Avoiding double jeopardy of course!

  5. Finally, everyone worried about affirmative action when legacy candidates are really taking up a pretty good percentage of accepted applicants at prestigious universities.
Legacy admissions are a barrier to economic mobility and interfere with the goal of a meritocracy.
With privileges like this, meritocracy is a myth.

  6. Yeah wow because that's NEVER happened.

  7. the College industry has everyone convinced that a Degree actually means something.
But how many Americans paid that money, and never ended up using the piece of paper they gave you?
Its just a Buy-In, you have to Pay to Be Successful, and its not even a guarentee.
If you are already wealthy, you'll always be wealthy, but if not, you're just here to pay money, and continue to be poor.
Its the entire system, the United States System, not just colleges, Colleges are just part of the bueiness.

  8. Entirely american greedy

  9. nepotism, racism, and avarice = legacy admission programs. schools will always prioritize the white and wealthy. especially if the schools know that the student applying is from a lineage of wealthy alums. it's always been a corrupt business under the veil of "education". we've also known "graduates" who paid their way into getting their degrees. how do you expect your society/country to progress if y'all keep prioritizing the wrong people. the students who don't deserve to be in certain schools because they are quite frankly incompetent and unfit in that school's program or level. these are the same student who take opportunities from other students who applied who are better than them academically.

  10. Finally something is said about this. Yet let's keep blaming black and Latino students.

  11. Putting someone in a position that he's not qualified for will only bring pressure and tragedy. That's why the market and society exist and function. Not only is it unfair, it creates mental health, substance abuse, safety for female students, and all other issues.

  12. Nepo Babies lmao lit bae Selfie

  13. I'm fine with legacy admissions being scrapped as long as affirmative action is scrapped at the same time. People should be accepted to college on merit, not because their parents went there, and not because they're a minority.
P.S. Look at that – 'their, there & they're' in one sentence.

  14. I have zero problems with legacy candidates, if a father was a marine and his son followed his path, it's an honour, college is the same, as a minority American, no one should be enrolled because of their skin colour or stupid diversity comes first policy. if they have legacy candidates, it's good for college them as well.

  15. legacy ends in 1 generation, the following are golden babies, my son included lol

  16. This is why colleges are biased and a waste of time and money

  17. Yeah everyone knows it should be priority to people with dark skin. Duh
