This suggests that adequate vitamin D levels reduce inflammation and less severe disease in RSV-infected individuals."
06/2011 – Cord blood vitamin D deficiency is associated with respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis – "Vitamin D deficiency in healthy neonates is associated with increased risk of RSV LRTI in the first year of life. Intensified routine vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy may be a useful strategy to prevent RSV LRTI during infancy."

People spend more time indoors than outdoors during the late Autumn and Winter months resulting in less exposure to sunlight and decreased vitamin D levels, and increased risk of getting respiratory viruses. So the reasonable and scientific conclusion is that increasing vitamin D during these months should protect against their worst aspects, namely hospitalization and dth.
