Nearly 500 people have been evacuated from the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol as officials work to evacuate more people from the blockaded steel plant where thousands have been holed up for weeks. NBC News’ Jay Gray breaks down whether Ukrainian officials are hopeful that the “complex operation” will be successful in evacuating civilians.

civillians are secured by DPR troops as they come out of the plant and taken in Busses aranged by DPR troops to a village few dozen Kilometers away from Mariupol . There they are given medical attention, Screened and registered. few hours or a day or two later they are given choice to either go to Ukranian held territory or Russia or Russian held territory.
in case they prefer to go to Ukranian territory they are bussed to somewhere near Karamtosk and handed over to Ukranian authorities.

Why did Ukraine troops not allow the civilians to leave the city before and during the Russian attack? The reports are that civilians and hospital staff and families were turned back from evacuating Mariupol.

Anatoly Antonov, Russia's ambassador to the United States, said such arms deliveries were aimed at weakening Russia but that they were escalating the conflict in Ukraine while undermining efforts to reach some sort of peace agreement.
"What the Americans are doing is pouring oil on the flames," Antonov told the Rossiya 24 TV channel. "I see only an attempt to raise the stakes, to aggravate the situation, to see more losses."
