The Taiwanese people, residing in a free and democratic country, reject the notion of a communist authoritarian regime controlling their affairs. Hong Kong at present grapples with an authoritarian system suppressing free speech protests, leading to shamming or imprisonment of protesters.
It is China that appears inclined towards conflict, not the United States. China's aggressive behavior in the South China Sea, disregarding international law, challenges nations like the United States, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Canada….etc. not to intervene in its unlawful assertion of almost the entire South China Sea. China’s claim is illegal and unlawful under international law, as the principle is clear that no country in the world can own an entire sea or ocean.
Taiwan is the name of an island. It is a geological term. The government currently situated in Taiwan is called Republic of China. And its constitution claims the Whole of China, including both Mainland China and Taiwan. Same for People's Republic of China, whose government is situated in Mailand China, that also claims the Whole of China.
There is no ambiguity that both China want the whole of China. They are in suspended Chinese Civil War. And it will resume and one of these two governments will emerge as victor and claim the whole of China.

As a citizen of a country which is a close ally of the US, this is sad but, admittedly, what we've come to expect from US officials & US MSM? 1) The US does not "manage" situations to avoid war but to engineer wars. Hence, the Maidan coup in Ukraine in 2014 ousting a democratically elected president pursuing neutrality & replacing him with a US-picked extremist nationalist president antagonistic to Russia. Thus began the Ukraine civil war, now ongoing for nearly 10 years. Then the US supported this extremist government & the subsequent Zelensky government in NOT implementing the Minsk Agreement which Ukraine had signed with Russia, Germany & France & would have prevented the Russian invasion if implemented in full. There's no doubt in my mind that the US engineered this proxy war with the goal of collapsing & dismembering Russia. Like the many other US overseas military adventures throughout my 60+ years, this one doesn't appear to be going very well for the US/NATO either 2) Taiwan is recognised as a part of China whose sole government is in Beijing by the USA & all other Western countries, & indeed just about every other country on Earth. This is called the One China Policy & has been official US Policy for over 50 years. So how can China "invade" its own Province? To avoid war with China over Taiwan all the US has to do is adhere to its long-standing commitment to the One China Policy & support the "status quo" across the Taiwan Strait. This is exactly what China & the majority of Taiwanese people want to happen, as revealed in survey after survey. The US would need to stop its "meddling" in supporting & arming Taiwanese separatists, & I wonder how the US would feel if China was funding & arming Hawaiian or Texan separatists & sending high-level delegations to meet the leadership of said separatists? This is called "strategic empathy" which is a very important component in diplomacy, & if the US could develop a bit of it, war with China could easily be avoided. And if it had a bit of it in the past, the proxy war with Russia would not be happening.
