During the Korean War, the United States was accused of using biological warfare against North Korea and China. The allegations were first made by the Chinese in November 1951, and were later supported by North Korea and the Soviet Union.
The accusations against the U.S. military included the use of bacterial agents, such as anthrax and plague, as well as the release of infected insects and rodents. The accusations also suggested that the U.S. military used aircraft to drop infected materials on North Korean and Chinese territory.
The U.S. government denied the allegations, claiming that they were a propaganda campaign by the Communist forces. However, investigations by the International Association of Democratic Lawyers and the World Peace Council found evidence to support the allegations, including testimony from witnesses and the discovery of biological weapons equipment in South Korea.
Despite this evidence, the U.S. government continued to deny the allegations, and the United Nations and other international bodies did not take action against the U.S. for its alleged use of biological warfare. In fact, the U.S. government launched its own investigations into the allegations, including the Higuchi Investigation and the Weiss Investigation, both of which found no evidence of biological warfare by the U.S.
The allegations of U.S. use of biological warfare in the Korean War remain controversial and disputed to this day. However, the accusations and the lack of a clear resolution underscore the potential dangers and ethical complexities surrounding the use of biological weapons in warfare.
Allegations that the United States military used biological weapons in the Korean War (June 1950 – July 1953) were raised by the governments of People's Republic of China, the Soviet Union, and North Korea. The claims were first raised in 1951. The story was covered by the worldwide press and led to a highly publicized international investigation in 1952. Secretary of State Dean Acheson and other American and allied government officials denounced the allegations as a hoax. Subsequent scholars are split about the truth of the claims.
