It just sucks that the buildings in Turkey and other places don't have the strength to withstand and Earthquake of that magnitude where as in the US we have more advanced architecture to withstand an earthquake.
This is a man made disaster. Government bldg regulations lacking or not enforced. Japan 9.0 subduction quake in 2011 saw very few bldgs collapse – tsunami killed 16k people. These scenes of utter heartache are preventable with straightforward and widely accepted structural design.

7.8 magnitude is a very strong earthquake and it struck in the middle of the night when many were home in their beds! The death toll is going to be in the thousands I’m sure.
