This war not against Ukrainian, against western powers
It took so long to Russians taking Bakhmut because they try to save lives of their soldiers unlike Ukraine's. This war more and more looks like slaughter of Ukrainians. Ukraine is pushed against Russia by the west that wants them to fight up to the last Ukrainian. However Russia won't stop nor retreat. If it's necessary they would execute second mobilisation and even if Russia is about to loose, it would strike with nukes not Ukraine, but Europe. Then the US would say, "It's not of our business". I don't believe Americans would mess with Russia putting themselves in danger of nuclear destruction.

Is it a coincidence that zelensky left the country right when bakhmut fell? Coup in sight or assassination of zelensky for sacrificing Ukrainians for west. Ukraine needs to lay down arms and surrender. Save the remaining 80% or it will be gone too. West does not care about Ukraine or its people. Their goals are not even closely aligned with Ukrainians.

Can somebody explain the Russian strategy to me? What is the purpose of aiming the artillery at the city center civilian buildings? Wouldn't it be better to use artillery against the defensive lines?

Its not just the Russians. Ukrainian are also shelling their own cities. Unprofessional Ukrainian civilian guerilla fighters with no military training using deadly western weapons to destroy every thing and killing their own people. This dumb war need to stop. Someone just got stabbed today close to where I live, in Denmark. I think without knowing, that there will be no real frontline in the future, the people act irrationally without the help of anyone leader. The people who got stabbed, are probably hard working honest people, I don't know, escalation is happening all over the nations, people with no leader, no purpose, just their own thoughts to murder someone, they murder. Conflict seemingly isn't isolated to a frontline.
