Video captured the moments when a gray whale, who just gave birth showed off its newborn calf to passengers and crew of a whale-watching boat off the coast of Dana Strands Beach in Dana Point, California.

Cetacians are sweet creatures. Even the toothed carnivorous species. I once lived and worked in the tiny fishing village of Petersburg located in the heart of Southeast Alaska. I was working for one of the fisheries processing freshly caught Salmon for the frozen market. One afternoon I was out in Wrangel Narrows in a 15 ft. Skiff with a 40 horse outboard. There was a family of four Orcas swimming towards me. I decided to rendezvous with them. There was an adult male, female, and their twin baby calves. My guess is that the calves were 6 months old. I came right up to within feet from them. Up close, these creatures are huge! The male dorsal fin was as tall as a 6ft tall man. When they surface and exhale, it's loud and sounds like an explosion. There was a man sitting in his tiny dingy with his hat over his eyes not far from shore. He had his fishing pole extended. The two babies snuck up on him and breached like a couple of dolphins on each side of his boat and came down with a giant Splash! The poor fellow nearly fell into the icy water. The youngsters were just being merry pranksters. Then then joined their parents heading north.

The new baby probably needs some help surfacing and taking in air. She's taking the baby on her body, and encouraging this behavior. This may be normal maternal behavior, and not related to the presence of humans.

That's one of the most amazing sights!! I hope all of those people know how special that was. It certainly seemed like the mother was deliberately letting her baby be seen and admired. Although she did check the boat out, she didn't seem concerned about it at all.
