Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin testified before the Senate that defaulting on the debt ceiling would put America's reputation at risk and affect the livelihood of military and civilian personnel who may not be paid as they should be. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Mark Milley warned that defaulting on the debt would reinforce the idea of the United States as a declining power and increase risk.
The speaker suggests that Republicans are willing to hurt the country and the military in order to damage President Joe Biden's presidency and secure tax cuts for the wealthy. The statement expresses frustration and criticism towards this approach.
