Not allowing Ukraine to join NATO now is like telling the Jewish people during WW II that while we see the need to act, we're all still so afraid of Hitler that it'll be another decade before we can get to them.
In 2008 Ukraine was promised by NATO that they would "someday" be a member. Because of NATO kicking the can down the road, NATO has emboldened Putin to try to take over Ukraine.
It's as simple as that.
