If you join the military your obligation is to serve a minimum of 8 years . So after a 4 year active contract , congrats you are now a civilian. However you’re now added to the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) 4 years left or 2 years if you do 2 years reserve after active duty, in case war breaks out again the President can call you back up to go fight . Remember that, if you plan to enlist .
