We speak with the family of a man who died in his first training mission on the Osprey, the controversial military helicopter that was grounded after a number of deadly crashes. NBC’s Courtney Kube reports the military may be close to returning the Osprey to service, but some question whether it’s too soon.

I think you guys should be worried about other things
Due to the design and operation extremes of the fleet, the service and overhaul schedule needs to be halved. It's clear failures are more frequently than anticipated. This pattern indicates the lifespan of critical components is not as designed. The V-22 is relatively young with most components designed specifically for this aircraft. Therefore the lifespan of components were estimates. Lifespan differs due to a multitude of factors. One factor weighed heavily is geographical operation history. Corrosion, temperature extremes, environmental deposits, fuel and lubricant quality, availability of authentic parts, and other such factors play a role in ensuring the safety and longevity of the components and the airframe. The proliferation of counterfeit parts in use, in stock, and across the supply chain is more widespread than previously believed.
Counterfeit parts appear identical, but may not be of the same quality or even material. Most counterfeit parts are inferior in every way. Billions has been allocated to identify, replace, and trace the origin of counterfeit parts. The pandemic gave rise to an explosion in counterfeit production and distribution. The process of weeding out counterfeits has been hampered by lingering manufacturing and current supply chain issues. The same is true for the civilian aircraft fleet.
The V-22 has always been a fickle aircraft due to its specialized capabilities. As such the V-22 is susceptible to catastrophic incidents when components of the tiltrotor, gearbox, and/or engine fail due to autorotation being virtually nonexistent. The ability to jettison the heavy tiltrotors and glide (cargo load dependant); or stop the proprotors and deploy an airframe parachute(s) would be a lifesaver. However, for now, V-22s fall from the sky during catastrophic or cascading failures.
The V-22 is a highly capable workhorse like no other. Despite her issues she is indispensable. Her undisputed operational advantages and achievements justify the astonishing expense to keep these versitle craft airborne and safe. Further refinements are necessary to minimize tragic losses.

That hurts to hear that and I'm sorry for their loss, along with those who've died from the V-22 Ospreys.
It's true that the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor has been regarded as a controversial aircraft; despite that it's designed to get the best of both worlds from an airplane and helicopter. The V-22 made it's first flight in 1989 and has undergone numerous testing for almost two decades before entering service in 2007. At least Bell is working on another tiltrotor airframe currently undergoing testing since 2017; the V-280 Valor. So maybe once that new tiltrotor has been certified and enter service, maybe it could replace the V-22s.

The Osprey needs to be retired. It can't glide like an airplane or auto rotate like a helicopter if you have an engine failure…
The V-22 has had serious problems since it first came out. I remember in the early 2010 they were having major problems.

The MIC are manufacturing rip-offs while ripping-off the U.S. taxpayers to make the rip-off.
The Osprey was very questionable before it was given clearance for flight approval. They are replacing a very reliable C-140 Hercules, which while being extremely reliable is slower than the Osprey and it requires a runway to take off. The Ospreys's vertical take off and speed are it's useful benefit and advantages over any alternatives.

This aircraft has speed and range a normal helicopter cannot match.Unfortunately,it has too many points of failure in its swivel system.
This aircraft has been in service for almost 50 years. However, the problem is and has been in the flip-converter transmission (the gear box that swings the propellers' position from vertical to horizontal). This problem will reoccur. There is no technology currently available to completely resolve this problem.

Part of the problem is that there is in the way of being able to report the aircrafts from the ground. I mean we didn't even know what it was, we never even seen an aircraft like that. It circled our niehgborhood too low a couple time then it was gone. Like I still don't know who I could report this too like do I call the police, the sheriff, like is there a phone number for the point mugu naval base I can contact.
They circled for a couple times then they're gone like, you dont't know much of anything about the flight and it's gone with no recourse if you see something wrong from the ground.

Ospreys never should have been allowed to fly in the beginning.
I am fed up with the exorbitant amount of “training” deaths, and no one doing or saying anything on “The Hill” or Military. It is not right.

Mixing an Osprey with an inexperienced crew is a recipe for disaster. The Aircraft isn’t inherently flawed, it just takes more skill than any other aircraft to fly. Which is why so many young crews are unfortunately killed.
The Ospreys might look like cool flying machines but they are literally death traps even during the early stages of flight.
My dad helped engineer the pivots on the propeller. Saw the schematics when I was a kid. Marvel of engineering.
