  7. To put the whole militia thing to rest once and for all…Gun Quotations of the Founding Fathers

Who knows better what the Second Amendment means than the Founding Fathers? Here are some powerful gun quotations from the Founding Fathers themselves.

If you know of a gun quotation from a Founding Father not listed here, send it to us. (But make SURE it's not already listed. Okay?)

Back to the main Famous Gun Quotes page.

"A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined…"

    – George Washington, First Annual Address, to both House of Congress, January 8, 1790

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."

    – Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Constitution, Draft 1, 1776

"I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery."

    – Thomas Jefferson, letter to James Madison, January 30, 1787

"What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms."

    – Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Stephens Smith, son-in-law of John Adams, December 20, 1787

"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

    – Thomas Jefferson, Commonplace Book (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria), 1774-1776

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks." – Thomas Jefferson, letter to Peter Carr, August 19, 1785

"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed."

    – Thomas Jefferson, letter to to John Cartwright, 5 June 1824

"On every occasion [of Constitutional interpretation] let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying [to force] what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, [instead let us] conform to the probable one in which it was passed."

    – Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Johnson, 12 June 1823

"I enclose you a list of the killed, wounded, and captives of the enemy from the commencement of hostilities at Lexington in April, 1775, until November, 1777, since which there has been no event of any consequence … I think that upon the whole it has been about one half the number lost by them, in some instances more, but in others less. This difference is ascribed to our superiority in taking aim when we fire; every soldier in our army having been intimate with his gun from his infancy."

    – Thomas Jefferson, letter to Giovanni Fabbroni, June 8, 1778

“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

    – Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759

  25. Why are libs so opposed to people having the right to defend themselves and their families?

  26. Some of you New Yorkers are just ignorant. How can you be mad at this? You literally now have the right to protect yourself as well as your family just like the rest of the other states. How on earth is that a bad thing? The constitution permits you to do so. Your opinion is just insane thinking this will make things much worse when in fact you’ve been surrounded by criminals with illegal guns this whole time now you literally have a chance to fight back if you were ever caught in an unfortunate situation where you are held at gunpoint I hope to God you have some thing to equalize the situation. 94% of mass shootings occur on gun free zones. Also in New York you have much higher crime than other loser gun restricted states or states that are shall issue states. Why are you so afraid of law abiding citizens? Did you know off duty officers are more likely to commit gun crimes than a CPL holder? I highly suggest much more research is done before you put together a non-factual opinion. In this great county we live in you are entitled to your own opinions but you are not entitled to your own facts. Your opinion is 100% democratic rhetoric and it holds no water my friends.

In 2016 I believe the ninth circuit court the most liberal court in the nation ruled that we can carry open or concealed with no permit in all 50 states and Washington DC a rifle or handgun 365 days a year 24 hours a day all the states. It cost me $12,500 retainer on a lawyer but I challenge New York on this in 2017 and walked out of the state police barracks with my A.R. 15 and three handguns and several thousand rounds of ammunition and targets. It is a God-given right the government can never infringe upon or make us pay for a permit or a suppressor tax stamp or any of those things they’re all non-constitutional

But they're planning on including mass transit as a sensitive place. That is severely going to limit the law abiding to carry. Oh well, another lawsuit.

  34. Legal gun owners are not the problem it's the criminals and mass shooters

  35. They also need to go after these states that don't have stand your ground laws…probably same ones with may issues on the books

  36. more mass shootings incomming!
